But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you
good news of great joy for all the people.
"No," he said. "We already have all the staff we need."
"Good," she said. "Then would you mind getting someone to wait on me?"
Anyone who has been in stores since Thanksgiving knows what I'm talking about. It's
hard to get good service nowadays. That woman's experience reminds me of a man
who stopped at a tiny diner and asked for a cup of coffee with cream and sugar. He
was rather annoyed that the waitress forgot to bring a spoon with his coffee. After
trying unsuccessfully to get the waitress's attention, he announced in a loud voice,
"This coffee is going to be pretty hot to stir with my fingers."
Within seconds, the waitress appeared with another cup of coffee. "This cup isn't quite
as hot, sir," she beamed.
God is counting on us to be good servants, helpers and stewards, as we share the joy
of Christ coming to bring us close to God.
(Luke 2:10
NRSV)
Did you hear about the woman doing her Christmas shopping who walked up to the
manager of a department store and asked, "Are you hiring any help?"
Dear God, remind me of the joy I need to share in this busy season. Amen.
