Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, after
having
heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
Finally, it was time to go. The disciples were still apprehensive, but Jesus knew where
he needed
to be--with his friends. Jesus never forsakes those he loves--even though he does keep
us waiting
sometimes.
(John 11:5-6
NRSV)
You know the story of Lazarus well. Jesus is teaching and healing across the Jordan
River in the
region where John the Baptist first began his ministry when word came to him that his
friend
Lazarus was near death. Lazarus lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha.
Bethany was
only two miles from Jerusalem and Jesus had already experienced persecution in that
area. His
disciples cautioned him against going back there. This did not deter the Master, though
he did
linger where he was for a couple more days. He seemed to know something about
Lazarus'
condition that others did not know. He explained, "This sickness will not end in death.
No, it is
for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it."
Dear Jesus, help me to continue to grow and learn about my relationship with you as I
wait for
your direction. Amen.
