James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to
him,
"Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you."
There was silence for a while then Johnny replied, "Him who's got the biggest head!"
Pretty
good answer!
James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus with a request.
"Teacher," they
say somewhat presumptuously, "we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You."
Jesus
replied, perhaps with a knowing smile on his face, "What do you want Me to do for
you?" And
they said to Him, "Grant that we may sit in your glory, one on your right, and one on
your left."
James and John wanted what many want. They wanted their fifteen minutes of fame.
They wanted
respect, honor. They wanted their place in the sun. They wanted to sit in places of
honor in the
kingdom of God. But the best place to be is at Jesus' feet.
(Mark 10:35
NRSV)
A Sunday school teacher had been telling a class of little boys about crowns of glory
and
heavenly rewards for good people. "Now tell me," the teacher said at the close of the
lesson, "in
heaven, who will get the biggest crown?"
Lord Jesus, as I kneel before you, cleanse me of my selfishness, so that I can give
freely in my
service to your church. Amen.
