We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks; your name is near.
People tell of
your wondrous deeds.
There is a hymn that is rarely sung. Its title is, "All Praise To Thee My God This Night."
The
reason it is in many hymnals is probably due to the fifth verse, which are the familiar
words to
"The Doxology." "Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him all creatures
here below,
Praise him above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost." God has
truly blessed
us. May we truly praise Him!
(Psalm 75:1
NRSV)
I remember a scene in a movie where a farmer returned thanks by saying, "Lord, we
tilled the
ground, we planted the seeds, we did the fertilizing, we harvested the crops, we ground
the grain,
we kneaded the dough, we baked the bread, but we thank you just the same." That's
not
thankfulness, that's trivial ritual. True thanksgiving is not doffing one's hat to God, but
is an
affirmation of life. Our task is not just to get people to be polite, but to help people see
life in
such a way that natural thanksgiving occurs.
God of praise, you have traveled with us on our journey of life. I thank you and praise
you for a
journey that has not always been easy, but one where you have been near. Amen.
