But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and
tomorrow is
thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you--you of little faith?
In his book, The Person Reborn, Paul Tournier writes, "The farmer sows his wheat in
the gray
days of autumn. He knows in the springtime his field will be green with thousands of
little shoots
and that in the summer it will turn to the gold of harvest. Faith consists in the
recognition that it is
God who makes the grass grow and in loving and glorifying Him in thanksgiving.
Impiety consists
in deriding God, while, at the same time, counting upon having bread next year."
The story is told of a farmer who went into town for a little breakfast. As his meal was
set before
him, he bowed his head and offered a silent prayer. The man at the next table derided
him, "Hey,
does everybody do that where you come from?" "No," said the farmer. "The pigs don't."
In the
name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
(Matthew 6:30
NRSV)
Our job as followers of Jesus is not to teach people good manners, but to teach that life
is good
and holy. People who view life with gratitude are the most secure people in the world.
They
know that the spotlight doesn't always need to fall on them so they can express true
gratitude.
Insecure people are ungrateful and thereby bitter.
Loving God, I am very thankful for all your blessings. Help me to trust your promises.
Amen.
