Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever
follows
me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life."
A village elder rejoices that God speaks his language. All of us yearn to see God. We
yearn to
know that God is with us, that God knows us, understands us, helps us.
The closer we are to God the more we will know of his presence and work in our lives.
(John 8:12
NRSV)
Martha Wade is a Bible translator who has chosen to live in one of the most primitive
places on
earth, a jungle village in Papua, New Guinea, in order to translate the Word of God for
a people
who might have no other way to know it. Bible translation is a painstaking job that can
take years
to complete. When she had finished translating a portion of the Gospels, Martha
showed it to a
village elder. After reading it, he remarked, "Now I know God speaks our language."
Dear God, sometimes you feel distant. Certainly that is my fault not yours. May I walk
closely
with you everyday. Amen.
