But the residents of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, and
some with
the apostles.
It all reminds me of a young man who came to visit Harry Emerson Fosdick one day.
After Dr.
Fosdick had admitted him, the young man asked him to explain to him the difference
between
modernism and fundamentalism. "Go home and sober up," advised Fosdick, "and come
back
when you have slept it off and I will gladly give you the answer." The young man began
to sob:
"The trouble is, doctor, when I'm sober, I won't give a (flip)!" How many fights have
been fought
over things that don't really matter? Only God knows. There is only one thing that
matters--that is
the state of our heart, our soul, our mind in relationship to God and one another.
(Acts 14:4
NRSV)
So much that divides people from one another is petty. It is said that the split between
the
Mennonites and the Amish in the fifteenth century came about because of buttons.
Buttons. One
group decided it was all right to wear buttons because they were useful. The other said,
no,
buttons are a decoration and are sinful. And they split over buttons.
Lord Jesus, show me the way to put aside my petty differences so that I may never
cease to
witness your love. Amen.
