Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you
as you
wish." And her daughter was healed instantly.
Jesus was always pleased with signs of faith wherever he found them--whether from
this
Canaanite, or from the Roman Centurion or from one of the scribes or pharisees. To
Jesus faith is
the central issue of life.
(Matthew 15:28
NRSV)
A Canaanite woman came to Jesus with a request. Her daughter was suffering severely
from what
the woman described as a demon. Jesus seemingly ignored her. "I was sent only to the
lost sheep
of the house of Israel," he explained. But the woman begged him, "Lord, help me." And
Jesus
answered with an uncharacteristically harsh reply, "It is not fair to take the children's
bread and
throw it to the dogs." The woman, however, was insistent. "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs
eat the
crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Jesus was obviously pleased with her
response, for he
said to her, "O Woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you as you desire."
God of faith, I thank you that you know me by name and that you know my faith. Help
me to use
it for your glory. Amen.
