They are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that
is in Christ
Jesus.
That is a very imperfect analogy to what God has done in our behalf. God has adopted
us as
God's own children and walked us to freedom. We did not deserve it. We cannot even
live up to
it though we try all our lives long. In the vernacular of the business world, it is a done
deal. All we
can do is acknowledge it and build our lives around it. That is what grace is all about.
(Romans 3:24
NRSV)
During the Civil War, many soldiers were held captive in a Nashville, Tennessee
prison. One day
a lady appeared at the gate and said that she needed to see her son. She had talked
to the
commander. He had agreed to the release of her son, as planting season was nearing
and she
couldn't work her large farm by herself. She walked into the prison and said to the
prisoners, "I
have teenage clothes for somebody. I haven't a son, but I can free one of you." The
prisoners got
together and chose a captain. He put the clothes on and walked arm in arm with his
"mother,"
saying, as he went past the guards, "Come, we've got some plowing to do."
Loving God, touch me with your grace, as I nurture others in their journey with you.
Amen.
