Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing!
For the LORD has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his suffering ones.
Who could possibly say it better? "Joy is not the absence of suffering, but the presence of God."
My wish is that you might experience this joy.
(Isaiah 49:13
NRSV)
Barbara Johnson is a Christian speaker and author, and she and her husband run a ministry for
parents who are hurting. They receive letters all the time from parents whose children are caught
up in drugs, alcohol, crime, promiscuity, and rebellion. The Johnson's ministry to these hurting
parents is so effective because Barbara and her husband have faced so many tragedies in their own
family. They know that it's possible to survive overwhelming heartache and grief without losing
your faith. One parent who has found help and support from the Johnson's ministry sent them a
small plaque that sums up their philosophy well. It is inscribed with the message: "Joy is not the
absence of suffering, but the presence of God."
Dear God, in my own suffering may I find my joy in you. Amen.
