We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair;
persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the
death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.
Pain is a part of our human experience. God cries when we cry. God also calls us to continue
living, as we share God's love in Jesus Christ.
(2 Corinthians
4:8
NRSV)
Helen Hayes and her husband, Charles MacArthur,
lost their nineteen-year-old daughter to polio. MacArthur
himself died only a few years later, while Helen Hays is
in her eighties and has had a most productive life. Ms.
Hayes' explanation for her husband's early death is that
he never quit asking about his daughter's death, "Why us?
Why should it happen to us? We didn't do anything to
anybody. We never hurt anybody. Why? Why? Why?" Ms.
Hayes, seeing other people also in tragedy, asks, "Why
not us?"
Loving God, may I use my painful experiences to share your awesome love that heals all
suffering. Amen.
