Refresh my heart in Christ.
The Bible says that we are different once we have given our lives to God. When we give our lives
to God we don't learn to speak a new language; we become new people on the inside. We love
God, and want to live without sin. We want to love others, too. God changes our heart when we
give ourselves to Him through Jesus Christ.
(Philemon 1:20
NRSV)
Most people in America get their driver's license when they turn 16. This marks a change from
childhood to young adulthood. They are now grown-up enough to handle a car. Different cultures
around the world have different ways of celebrating the change from childhood to adulthood.
Among one tribe of Australian aborigines, young boys who have become adults are taught to
speak a new language -- an upside down language. For instance, if a boy wanted to say "I am
thirsty" in this new language, he would say "You are not thirsty." Instead of saying "I am tall," in
the upside down language he would say "You are short." Only boys who have reached a certain
age can learn this language. Once the boy has learned the upside down language, he is called a
man. By speaking this new language, he proves that he has grown up, that he is a different person
now.
Dear Jesus, change my heart into God's heart of love. Amen.
