For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them,
but rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.
Now we're going to talk about a different way of showing respect. The Bible says that the
Sabbath day -- which for us is Sunday -- is holy, and that we should treat that day with respect.
Now how do we do that? We don't do it by taking off our shoes on Sunday. One way we respect
the Sabbath is by going to church. Also, we could spend some time praying or reading the Bible.
What if we spent the day helping other people and doing nice things for others? That would be a
great way to respect the Sabbath! Whatever we do, we can remember that the Sabbath day is a
day dedicated each week to thinking about God. So long as we spend the day living as God
wants us to live, then we have respected the Sabbath, and we have respected God.
(Exodus 20:11
NRSV)
In Japanese society, it is a sign of respect to take off your shoes before you enter someone's
house. Japanese people take off their shoes and leave them outside the door of the house while
they're inside visiting. They believe that this is a way of showing respect for others.
Loving God, today may I show my great respect for you. Amen.
