Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then it
was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them."
Laughter is a wonderful gift from God, isn't it? There is
only one time I know of when laughter is not good. It is when you
are making fun of someone else. Sometimes people can be so cruel.
I hope you don't ever laugh at something that hurts someone else.
Jesus said, "By this shall all people know that you are my
disciples, that you love one another." When we love one another,
we don't make fun of another person.
Laughter is good for the soul. Let's tell
good jokes and giggle to our heart's content. But don't do it
if it is cruel to someone whom God loves.
(Psalm 126:2
NRSV)
I heard about a tribe in New Guinea that sometimes comes
down with what is called, "laughing sickness." An afflicted
person can't stop laughing and literally laughs themselves to
death. I have heard people say that they died laughing, but they
didn't really mean it. They simply meant that they laughed a long
time. I have seen people start giggling and have trouble
stopping, haven't you?
Dear God, thank you for the laughter and joy you have given to me. Guard me from hurting
others with cruel jokes. Amen.
