Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from
God and now I am here. I did not come on my own, but he sent me.
When Jesus was crucified on the cross, there were probably lots of people who wanted to say "al
shah mat"--the king is dead. Jesus is dead. But we know that Jesus rose from the dead and that he
lives for evermore. The king is not dead. He is alive, and He is with us here and now.
(John 8:42
NRSV)
Most of you have probably played chess? It is a board game in which you move around various
pieces on a board and try to capture the other person's king piece. This game was invented about
1,500 years ago in India. Whenever someone was about to capture a chess king, they would say
"Al shah mat," which means "the king is dead." Today in English we say "checkmate," but
originally people would say "al shah mat"--the king is dead.
Dear God, help me feel your presence in my life, as I make more room in my heart for your Son
Jesus Christ. Amen.
