I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous ordinances.
You know, people can be like bananas too. When we first start out in life, we are like green
bananas. We don't know much about God, and we don't know how to follow God or live the way
He wants us to. We've got a lot of learning and growing to do. I guess you could say we need to
get "ripe," just like green bananas need to get ripe. Sometimes we can go through some tough
events in our life. Someone we love hurts us. Someone we love gets sick. A loved one dies. All
these things hurt. But if we learn from these experiences, then they will teach us how to be better
Christians. We have to go through challenging times in order to grow in our faith. And just like
bananas become sweeter as they ripen, we become stronger and sweeter in our spirits as we learn
more about God.
(Psalm 119:7
NRSV)
Do you like to eat bananas? I do. How do you like to eat your bananas? Do you eat bananas
with: peanut butter, honey, as a sandwich, banana split, or banana pudding? Have you ever eaten
a green banana? I wouldn't try it if I were you. Green bananas are not ripe yet. They're not ready
to eat. So they taste really sour and yucky. You've got to let green bananas sit in a warm place
for a while and ripen. As they ripen, they get sweeter and sweeter, and they taste better and
better. You can tell when a banana is finally ripe because the banana peel turns a pretty yellow
color. Once you see that yellow color, you know that the banana is ripe and ready to be eaten.
Dear God, today, may my spirit grow sweeter as I learn more about you. Amen.
