And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the
glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth.
You know, some people think that obeying God is like a game of basketball. They think that
every time they do a good deed, they get a point. Every time they help someone, or share
something, or give money to the church, they get a point with God. And the more points they
get, the more God loves them. But that's not how God works. We can't earn points with God.
God says, "I love you no matter what. You don't have to earn My love. I'll give you My love as
a free gift. All you have to do is accept it." That's called grace. When you hear me talk about
God's grace, I'm talking about God's free gift of love to all of us.
(John 1:14
NRSV)
Basketball is a fun game. Every time you throw the ball through the basket, you get two points.
If you stand really far away and throw the ball through the basket, then you get three points.
Whoever has the most points at the end of the game is the winner. If you practiced really hard
and really improved your aim, then you could score lots and lots of points. That's the only way
that you can win a game of basketball.
Dear God, thank you for your grace of love that never ends and is not dependant on the number
of
points I earn. Amen.
