But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.
(2 Peter 3:13 NRSV)

When someone makes you a promise, how do you know he or she will keep it? After Jesus' death, it used to be the custom to write out contracts or promises on a piece of paper, and then to sign the paper with an X. By signing the paper with an X, you were making a promise with your whole heart. This was not a promise you could break. Do you know why? The X symbolized the cross on which Jesus died. Also, we spell Christ in English, but in the Greek language Christ was spelled XRISTOS. The X stood for the first letter of the word "Christ." So the X symbol was very important because it represented Jesus' promise to us that He would rise up from the dead and go to Heaven. Jesus kept His promise!

Promises are important. When God makes us a promise, God keeps it. That is something for which we can be very thankful, for God promises always to love us and to be with us. When we make promises to others, we need to keep them as well.

Dear God, show me the way to be a faithful promise keeper. Amen.
