"Honor your father and mother" this is the first commandment with a promise."
Our mothers do a lot to care for us, too, don't they? Today is the day we celebrate mothers and
thank them for all the wonderful things they do. There are many reasons why we love our
mothers. One of our mother's jobs is to love us, so that we can learn to love other people. The
Bible says that we are to love others, as Jesus has loved us. Let's remember to thank our mothers
and parents for teaching us how to love.
(Ephesians 6:2
NRSV)
Some time ago, I was reading about birds. I read that when bird mothers are trying to hatch their
eggs, they develop what is called a "brood spot." Blood starts rushing to this one point in the
middle of their chest. That part of their chest becomes very warm. Then the mother birds press
this brood spot up against their eggs. The warmth from the mother bird's brood spot helps to
hatch the eggs. This brood spot helps the mother bird to care for her eggs.
Loving God, thank you for loving mothers. Amen.
