Take care, brothers and sisters, that none of you may have an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.
(Hebrews 3:12 NRSV)

How many of you have seen your wife, mom or grandmother put on mascara? They put it all around their eyes to make them look pretty. Back thousands of years ago, mascara was invented for a very different reason, though. In ancient Egypt, both men and women wore mascara to protect themselves from evil spirits. They believed that if someone evil looked into their eyes, then an evil spirit would come into their bodies. The ancient Egyptian people would put mascara all around their eyes so that it would be harder for an evil look to get in their eyes.

What do we use today to protect us from evil? We sure don't use mascara, do we? We know that Jesus has the power to cast out evil, because He is God's son. He is perfect. There is nothing in this world, no matter how evil, that can defeat Jesus. His perfect love and perfect goodness destroy evil. It's so good to know that we can ask Jesus to protect us from evil and to keep us away from sin and to cleanse us of our sin.

Dear God, protect me from that which moves me from you. Amen.
