Repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called that you might inherit a
blessing.
The Old Testament tells us of a different battle that was won in a very different way. It is the
battle of David and Goliath. David was a young farm boy who loved God and willingly served
Him. Goliath was a gigantic, mean man who didn't care about God. No one thought David could
possibly survive against Goliath. But David was fighting for the glory of God. He loved God,
and he was fighting to protect God's people. Because of this, God blessed David and helped him
to defeat Goliath. David stayed closed to God, and God blessed him for it. We are also blessed
when we stay close to God.
(1 Peter 3:9
NRSV)
There are a lot of cat lovers in our world. I had a cat during my childhood that was named
Midnight. It had a little white spot under his neck that I referred to as the moon. The ancient
Egyptians also loved cats. Over 2,000 years ago, the Egyptian people and the Persian people
were fighting a war against each other. The Persian people were losing a battle, until their leader
came up with a brilliant idea. He had all of the Persian soldiers find a cat and carry it into battle.
When the Egyptian soldiers saw that the Persian soldiers were carrying cats, they didn't try to kill
the Persian soldiers. The Egyptians refused to fight the Persian soldiers because they were afraid
that some cats might get hurt in the battle. The Persians easily won the battle that day because
they stayed close to the cats.
Dear God, may I be a blessing to others because I am close to you. Amen.
