For your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in faithfulness to you.
I am glad that Jesus didn't wear sunglasses. People could see his eyes. And his eyes were filled
with love. When the risen Jesus showed himself to his disciple Thomas, Thomas bowed down and
said, "My Lord and my God." The Bible wants us to see that when we look into Jesus' eyes and
see love, we are looking into the eyes of God.
(Psalm 26:2
NRSV)
Why do we wear sunglasses? Usually we wear sunglasses to protect our eyes from the sun.
Sunglasses were invented about 570 years ago in China. The first sunglasses were not worn to
protect one's eyes from the sun; they were used to hide people's eyes. In ancient China, court
judges wore sunglasses so no one could see their eyes. Our thoughts and emotions often show in
our eyes, and the judges did not want anyone to know what they were thinking. When a criminal
was on trial before a judge, the criminal had no idea whether he would be found guilty and
punished or be found innocent and set free. Most of the criminals must have been scared at not
being able to see the judge's eyes.
God of love, may my eyes show your love. Amen.
