There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love.
(1 John 4:18 NRSV)

God is good. It's out of the goodness of God that we see all the beauty of the creation He has given us. It is out of the goodness of God that God has given Himself through Jesus Christ. Yet, there is a part of us that is afraid that God is not good. It's like the demoniac that Mark tells about in the 5th Chapter of Mark. There was a part of this man, who lived among the tombs, that was pleased when Jesus arrived. He ran to Jesus eagerly. But there was also a part of him that was afraid of Jesus. When he ran to Jesus and fell upon his knees, he cried out, "Please don't hurt me; please don't hurt me." There's a part of us that is afraid that God is "out to get us, out to hurt us."

Obviously, God is not like that, but we do have our fears. Our call today is to work through our fears, so we can see the full goodness of God.

Dear God, help me of rid myself of those fears that keep me from you. Amen.
