In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses
against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.
(2 Corinthians 5:19
NRSV)
Martin Luther, the great leader of the Protestant reformation, had great difficulty in the beginning
of his ministry serving the Holy Communion. In fact, he failed the first time he tried to serve the
Communion. Through counseling, he discovered that the reason he failed to serve the
Communion was his great hostility toward God. He was hostile toward God because he said, "I
just can't understand a God who would do what He did to His Son, sending His Son to the cross."
Later he came to understand that God is love and that God is good, when he recognized the
meaning of the scripture that said, "God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself." But it
was not just God putting the sins of the world upon His Son and making His Son suffer. It was
God becoming a human being Himself and taking upon Himself the sins and sufferings of other
people--the sufferings and sins that belong to us--because He loves us and cares for us.
Lord Jesus, thank you for bearing my sins and for helping me to see God's true greatness. Amen.
