See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are.
(I John 3:1 NRSV)

There was an article sometime back in READER'S DIGEST concerning the color of our eyes. Have you ever wondered why people have different colored eyes? It is a wondrous thing that some of us have blue eyes, some green, some nearly black. Why? The color of our eyes depends on how much melanin we have in our body. Melanin determines eye color, skin color and hair color. Someone with a large amount of melanin will have dark hair and eyes. Someone with less melanin will have lighter eyes and hair.

The source of this kaleidoscope of colors lays in how our ancestors adapted to their climate. People who lived in areas of the world with lots of sunshine developed darker pigment in their eyes and skin which protected them against the damaging rays of the bright sun. People who lived in areas with reduced sunlight developed lighter pigment--ideal for allowing the skin to absorb more sunlight. So, it is not surprising that Sweden produced blondes while the Sudan produced people with dark skin. What you and I look like depends in large part on what our ancestors encountered centuries ago.

All of this is to say that God created a rainbow of colors in us. We are all special children of God!

Dear God, help me today to treat everyone as a special child of yours. Amen.
