We sent Timothy, our brother and co-worker for God in proclaiming the gospel of
Christ, to strengthen and encourage you for the sake of your faith,
"I remember Ruth Davis who would not let me become a 'drop out' in Sunday School. Several
times I stopped going to Sunday School because I liked to go to the golf course on Sunday
mornings to earn money as a caddy. When I would miss three Sundays in a row, Mrs. Davis
would come to our house and would say to me, 'Curtis, tomorrow morning I will be here at 9:30
to pick you up. Be ready.' I was always ready when she stopped by. She was someone special.
The only way I can repay her is by encouraging someone else to become part of the Christian
family.
(1 Thessalonians 3:2
NRSV)
Curtis Schofield, a Christian pastor and former College President tells about the people who were
influential in his life. "I remember, with gratitude, that Al Morton changed everything for me as a
child by inviting me to Sunday School. Up until I went to Sunday School my experience in a new
school, and in a new town, was that the people did not like 'Yankees.' I was a newcomer from
Wisconsin in a small, southern coal town. Once I arrived in Sunday School everything changed. I
was treated with care and respect. Now I know it was because of the influence of Jesus Christ.
The power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ can change even deep-seated prejudices that otherwise
control us.
Dear God, by word and deed give me the opportunity to encourage someone to become your
follower. Amen.
