And Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, "Is it lawful to cure people on the
sabbath, or not?"
He was asked if he knew anyone who had ever reached this stage in life. He replied that from
what he had read he felt that Dr. Schweitzer had perhaps reached that stage of selfless living.
He then told how Dr. Schweitzer, as a young man, had been an accomplished musician and an
outstanding theologian and author. Yet he gave up those great professions to study medicine and
then to go to Africa to serve those who could never appreciate the sacrifice he had made for
them. He concluded by saying, "When Dr. Schweitzer was asked why he was willing to make
such a sacrifice, he replied, 'Because Jesus asked me to do it.'"
(Luke 14:3
NRSV)
A noted professor was being interviewed. A reporter asked, "Doctor, in your opinion what is the
highest stage of development that a human being can attain?" The professor answered, "I believe
the highest stage a person can reach is that of post conversion. It is a stage where a person is able
to give himself or herself to others without any concern for self interest."
Dear Jesus, may I hear and do what you ask of me. Amen.
