See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God;
and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
But who does God say we are? We are his children!
(1 John 3:1
NRSV)
Karen Burton Mays says that once when one of their children was small and had been
misbehaving, he found himself at the end of a stern parental lecture. "What are we going to do?"
asked the adult. In self-resignation the child suggested, "Why don't we jes' frow me ina garbage."
That, says Ms. Mays, has become the signature statement for any time when a family member is
frustrated with himself: "Jes frow me ina garbage, I guess." This is where many people see
themselves. "Persons of no importance." Name Unknown. "Jes frow me ina garbage, I guess." No
value, no potential, no purpose.
Lord Jesus, thank you for bringing me into the family of God. Amen.
