"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I
consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations."
Not surprisingly, Jeremiah did what most prophets of God before him had done. Jeremiah
protested, saying that he was no great speaker. He pointed out his age and inexperience. But the
Lord promised to be with Jeremiah and told him not to be afraid. God touched Jeremiah's mouth
and gave him words to speak. And speak them Jeremiah did. He became one of God's most
eloquent spokesmen.
May we not let our excuses get in the way of fulfilling God's calling.
(Jeremiah 1:5
NRSV)
God came to a young man named Jeremiah and called him to be a prophet. Jeremiah probably
wished it was his mother calling him instead of God. The life of a prophet was difficult and even
dangerous. Jeremiah would not be a popular messenger. But this was God speaking to Jeremiah,
not his mother. God told Jeremiah that He had known him and had planned his calling even before
Jeremiah was born. This was not a call to be taken lightly.
Dear God, help me to remove the obstacles that hold be back from serving you. Amen.
