For the needy shall not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the poor perish forever.
Jesus is cautioning his followers against public displays of religiosity, but he is also telling us how
to celebrate our faith with "acts of righteousness." What are these acts of righteousness? Let's
read on: "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do
in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men." So, here is the first act of
righteousness: GIVE TO THE NEEDY. Not publicly; not with fanfare, but still give.
A minister once said that we will be measured by how we "treat those who live in the manger not
in the mansion . . . The blessed of us,"must save the rest of us."
(Psalm 9:18
NRSV)
Jesus says, "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If
you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven."
Dear Jesus, you have blessed me. Now, teach me daily the ways that I can share those blessings.
Amen.
