Better is a little with righteousness than large income with injustice.
Jesus was upset by what he saw. We are not accustomed to Jesus being angry. We like to think
that Jesus was always kind and loving to everyone he encountered. We would like to think that
Jesus never said a harsh word to anyone. Jesus was so angry that he felt he had to do something
to get the people's attention.
Jesus got their attention. May we also not be passive about the injustices we see.
(Proverbs 16:8
NRSV)
There in the Temple courtyard were people buying and selling cattle, sheep and doves for
sacrifices. The merchants who were selling the livestock thought they were providing a service for
those pilgrims from out of town. They would not have to travel with cattle or sheep; one was
available for them to purchase for their sacrifice. Temple workers were also exchanging foreign
coins for Temple currency. Again they thought they were doing the people a favor. However,
they were taking advantage of the people by charging outrageous fees for their services.
Dear God, show me the way to right the injustices I see. Amen.
