May mercy, peace, and love be yours in abundance.
There is a wonderful story of a couple who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, and
the small Midwestern town they lived in threw quite a party for them. After the party everyone
went home.
As was the custom, the husband went to the kitchen, prepared a piece of toast and a small glass of
milk, and called his wife to announce that it was ready. She walked into the kitchen, took one
look at the snack, and burst into tears. The husband was naturally puzzled, so he embraced her
and asked what the problem was. She tearfully explained that she had thought that on this most
special of all days he would have been more thoughtful and not given her the end piece of bread.
The man was silent for a moment, and then he quietly said, "Why, Honey, that's my favorite piece
of bread."
This man was giving what he thought was the best part of the bread. Sometimes this happens to
us. We simply don't recognize the good things that are given to us.
What good things has God given to you? What good things has your husband or wife given to
you?
(Jude 1:2
NRSV)
Remember to recognize the good things.
O God, help me to never cease to share the good things you give. Amen.
