And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour
has not yet come."
There have been many times, in my own life, when I did not recognize the invitation to act or
didn't act soon enough, and I lost the opportunity to help and serve. We shouldn't make up
excuses, but we should act upon the invitation or opportunity that God has set before us.
God doesn't ask to do things that we don't have the ability to do. Mary shows her confidence in
Jesus' ability to act when she gives the instructions to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
In
other words, "He will find some way to solve this problem." Mary had confidence in Jesus and
God has confidence in us. There is much the needs to be done. God will not ask us to do
something we do not have the gifts to fulfill.
(John 2:4
NRSV)
Jesus responds to Mary's request by saying, "My hour has not yet come." Jesus may have
been
saying to Mary, "I must wait for the right opportunity to reveal God's greatness through me."
But,
I wonder how often we respond to an invitation to act and serve by coming up with some
excuse
as to why we cannot act now.
Dear God, as I hear your call in my life, keep after me until I act. Amen.
