When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine."
I remember a cartoon where an older couple was on a Sunday afternoon drive. They are driving
behind a cuddling young couple who are more interested in each other than they are in the road in
front of them. After watching the young couple for some time the wife of the older couple asked
her husband, "Why don't we sit together like that anymore?" Quick as a flash her husband said,
"Well, dear, I haven't moved."
What invitations to act are we receiving? Jesus was being invited to help the wedding celebration
continue. God may be calling us to do more in our church, in our community, in our place of
work, or in our family.
(John 2:3
NRSV)
In our reading today, when the wine gave out, Jesus' mother simply said to Jesus, "They have no
wine." This was a simple invitation for Jesus to act. It would be like going to mom and dad and
saying, "I have no lunch money." Or it would be like looking at our spouse and saying, "We have
nothing for dinner." These statements are an invitation to act. There are calling us to do
something about the situation.
Loving God, help me to hear your invitation and help me to act upon it. Amen.
