When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one
another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has
made known to us."
Can you get the image of a tiny baby, wrinkled skin, face all scrunched up, arms and legs
twitching spasmodically? And there's the tiny foot, pushing at the strips of cloth that bind it . . .
Five miniature toes bubbling from the end of a little red pad, one small step, not even yet taken . .
. And still, at the same time, one giant leap. "One giant leap . . ." when God comes close to us to
say, "I love you."
(Luke 2:15
NRSV)
Remember July 21, 1969 . . . Neil Armstrong stepped out of the lunar module from Apollo 11,
and planted the first human footprint on the dusty surface of the moon! And what did he say? Do
you remember that? One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind! It was an astounding
thing. It's a fitting picture, in many respects, for the scene at Bethlehem. Think of it! One small
step for a man . . .
Loving God, in the most unlikely place, God shows you and me how much we are loved. Amen.
