And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid
him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
One night Brian's parents asked him to lead in prayer before dinner. Brian said, "I'd like to quote a
Scripture verse before I pray." And he read a verse we often read during the Advent season, Mark
13:37: "I say unto you what I have already told you before--watch . . ."
Kids can be demanding, but, parents, don't you dare apologize if you can't give your children
everything you would like to give them. They may be very fortunate that you cannot. Otherwise
they might grow up like many of us--prizing material possessions over spiritual ones--diamonds
over divinity--riches over righteousness. Instead, give them lots and lots of love. Let anything
else you give them be a mere bonus.
(Luke 2:7
NRSV)
Rick Warren tells about a boy named Brian. For weeks Brian bugged his parents about getting
him a watch for Christmas. Finally his dad told him, "Brian, if you mention that watch again,
you're not going to get it. Quit bugging us!"
Dear God, I cannot say enough about the great bonus you gave me in Jesus Christ. Amen.
