But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from
you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient
days.
There was a little book titled, DEAR GOD, CHILDREN'S LETTERS TO GOD. One young lady
wrote, "Dear God, was there anything special about Bethlehem or did you just figure that it was
as good a place as any to start a franchise? Your friend, Sara age 12."
Obviously God thought that was the best place on earth to start a franchise. God humbled himself
and came into a stable and a manger, among cattle and sheep and shepherds, in the tiny town of
Bethlehem in order to communicate to us God's love and God's purpose.
(Micah 5:2
NRSV)
God had a need to communicate God's love to us. Maybe a manger, some straw, some sheep and
some shepherds, were just the thing. Maybe the little town of Bethlehem was the only place that
could have happened. We probably would have had our child born in Rome or Athens or, at least,
in Jerusalem. But God came humbly into the world to show us how to live with others.
Lord Jesus, through you God has communicated clearly to me. May I also take time to pray and
talk to my father in heaven. Amen.
