I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand
and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations.
The comic strip goes on to tell of other stories where Uncle Scrooge tries to get rid of his wealth
to become a normal person. He never succeeds. He always ends up the richest person. Uncle
Scrooge's nature seems to attract wealth.
Jesus also has a nature that attracts. The gospel of John says, "in him was life, and the life was the
light of all people." Jesus' nature is to attract light, and Jesus is the one who can turn on the light
in us.
(Isaiah 42:6
NRSV)
In one of the old Donald Duck comic strips, it tells a story of Donald's rich Uncle Scrooge. Uncle
Scrooge is taking a lot of nerve medicine, because his wealth has driven him nearly crazy. People
were constantly asking him for money. In an attempt to escape his high pressure life, they all go to
a remote village. As they were parachuted in, Uncle Scrooge drops one of the bottle caps from his
nerve medicine. One of the villagers finds it. Soon the bottle cap is traded like money. Uncle
Scrooge finds himself the richest villager, because of all the bottle caps he has.
Loving God, may your light brightly shine through me today. Amen.
