Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and
the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.
One Sunday a young boy came up to him and said, "Sir, what are you going to do with your
flower? I would like to have it if you are just going to throw it away."
The minister began to take it off when he asked the boy what he was going to do with the
boutonniere. The boy who was certainly under the age of ten said, "I'm going to give it to my
granny. My mother and father got divorced last year. I was living with my mother, but when she
got married again, she wanted me to live with my father. I live with him for a while, but he said I
could not stay, so he sent me to live with my grandmother. She is so good to me. I want to give
this flower to her for loving me."
The minister could hardly speak. He told the boy what a wonderful loving boy he was. Then he
told the boy to go and get the big bouquet of flowers from the alter that a family had given that
day. Then the minister said, "Please take them to your granny because she deserves the very best."
(Revelation 21:6
NRSV)
I remember a story of a minister who was always given a boutonniere to put on his suite. He had
been getting the boutonniere so long that it had become routine.
Dear God, help me to give my very best in sharing your love. Amen.
