Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God
without being born from above."
Nicodemus was confronted with the passage of time. He had lived a good life. John tells us that
Nicodemus was a respected member of the community--solidly middle-class. But, like most
people, he probably longed to turn the clock back. Imagine how astonished he was when Jesus
said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from
above"

A seventy-year-old man was telling his grandchildren what life was like when he was their age.
"When I was young," he told them, "closets were for clothes, not for 'coming out of.' Fast food
was what we ate during Lent. There was no such thing as computer dating, house husbands, dual
careers, commuter marriages, or support groups. There were no tape decks, CDs, artificial hearts,
or word processors. And to us, letters grouped together like DDT, VCR, DNA, and MADD
would have meant lovers' initials carved on a tree." Aging is not easy. One fellow put it this way,
"I still have something on the ball but am less interested in bouncing it."
Loving God, thank you for the new birth I have with Jesus Christ my savior. Amen.
