And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
(Matthew 16:18 NRSV)

Near the Mexican border, in a small Texas town called Eagle Pass, live Jo and Rumel Fuentes. They live in a poor neighborhood with a dirt street, and every day before dawn Rumel travels by bus to college seventy miles away. Three nights a week, after coming home on the bus, Rumel teaches American History classes for citizen applicants. And on the other two nights a week he teaches high school dropouts. Federal funds have been cut off for these courses, and most of the teachers have gone, but Rumel has promised his students that he would keep teaching as long as they continued to study.

Rumel's wife, Jo, is busy as well. She is the secretary at a church during the afternoon, and on weekends, their only time together, they both volunteer at the local neighborhood center. They helped organized the fund raisers to pay for the center, and they continue to give it their support.

Jo and Rumel don't see anything remarkable about their lives. However, any non-Christian who looks at them will see the true meaning of the faith that we profess here today. They believe in the power of sharing themselves and their faith.

God of sharing, guide me as I share my life with your people and your church. Amen.
