But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been
heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John.
"Later Ann asked me if wrinkles hurt. But it seemed to me she was really asking about what it
means to grow old."
What does it mean to grow old? Every person born has to come to grips with this question.
Does it hurt? Is it fun? Is it humiliating? Should we gracefully bear up under it, or is it the best
part of life? Should we look forward to it or should we dread it? Must we apologize for it or can
we brag about it? Are you proud of your age, or do you keep it a secret?
Remember how old Zechariah & Elizabeth when they had their first child John the Baptist. God
blesses us in every stage of life!
(John 1:13
NRSV)
Sue Kidd wrote that "Last year I sat beneath a funeral awning in the warm Georgia sun and
watched as my grandmother was buried. While the minister spoke, I remembered the last time I
saw her. She held my seven-year-old daughter in her lap, and as Ann moved her finger along the
folds of Grandma's face, Grandma said,`Those are my wrinkles. They mean I'm getting very old.'"
Dear God of all ages, help me to feel the blessings of my age and help me to see the blessings
you have given to others. Amen.
