So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for
we are members of one another.
I'm sure you know from your own experience that it is difficult to make drastic changes in your
life. And it is even harder to stick with the changes once they are made. How many of you have
kept your New Year's resolutions from last January? How many of you even remember what they
were? It's so easy to slip back into old habits. That is exactly what happened to the believers in
Ephesus. And that's why Paul's encouragement was so important for them.
Our words of direction and support to our children and to others are vitally important in
helping them to stay in tune with Jesus Christ.
(Ephesians 4:25
NRSV)
The Apostle Paul had the task of encouraging his churches. Remember, he was working on
building the church at a time when being converted to the Christian faith meant monumental
changes in people's lives. The whole concept of Christianity was something brand new in the
world. Every gentile believer could remember a time when he or she worshiped the old pagan
gods.
Dear God, help me to speak words that will encourage others to stay close to Jesus. Amen.
