Paul said, "May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus
Christ."
Others glory in their possessions. As Frank Tyger has so cleverly put it: "America is the land of
the spree and the home of the crave." Fights over money rank as the number-one source of marital
discord according to most surveys. Some people glory in their possessions.
I wonder how many of us truly glory in the cross of Christ. I am speaking to myself as well as
you. Even in the ministry there are many temptations to glory in worldly things. I heard about a
famous preacher who used to wear red socks, sequined trousers and a flashy checkered sport coat
into the pulpit. Then he would begin his message by praying, "O God, hide me behind the cross!"
St. Paul gloried in the cross of Christ. And so can we. All we need to do is spend a few minutes
thinking about the meaning of that cross for our lives.
(Galatians 6:14
NRSV)
Where do you find glory? We all glory in something, don's we? Some people glory in their
accomplishments. Sir Christopher Wren lies buried in St. Paul's Cathedral, the great church that
he both designed and built. On his tombstone is a simple Latin inscription which means, "If you
wish to see his monument, look around you." Some people glory in the things they can
accomplish.
Dear God, may I truly glorify you through the cross of Jesus Christ. Amen.
