"Go in peace. The mission you are on is under the eye of the LORD."
(Judges 18:6 NRSV)

Some of you are fans of the movie characters THE BLUES BROTHERS, played by Dan Ackroyd and the late John Belushi. Through a strange mixture of religion and zaniness too complex to get into here, two brothers, Jake and Elwood, set out to raise funds for a group of nuns. They decide to accomplish this task by getting their old band together again after a long period of inactivity. They contact each of the former members of the band with this message: "We're on a mission from God."

Jesus called his twelve disciples together: Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James, son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot. Jesus gave these men authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness and to preach the kingdom of God.

Friends, there is no limit to what people can accomplish when they are on a mission from God.

Loving God, show me the way to get on a mission for you. Amen.
