When they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some scoffed; but others said, "We
will hear you again about this."
So it was with those who listened to St. Paul. Some heard and responded positively. Others just
walked away. And now it's our turn. Shall we follow Christ--even to the point of being a living
witness to his presence, or are we content to protect what we have now?
(Acts 17:32
NRSV)
One of Bruce Larsen's sons crossed the Sahara Desert a few years ago. He made an interesting
discovery. He claimed you could divide all the travelers making the journey across the desert into
two different groups. There were the people who were intent on getting across the desert at any
cost. Then there were those whose top priority was to save their vehicle. He ran into two Swiss
students whose Land Rover developed some small problem. The problem was potentially serious,
so they started back to Switzerland immediately. On the other hand, he tells of traveling part of
the time with a group of Germans. They had abandoned their fairly new Peugeot car in the desert.
They continued on their way, hitching a ride on a truck. The most important thing to them was
getting across the desert. The vehicle was just a means of getting there. The real difference was
in terms of goals. Some were determined to get across. Others just wanted to protect what they
had.
Loving God, help me to be free in being a faithful witness. Amen.
