You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right
hand are pleasures forevermore.
The moderator of the group explained that they would go around in a circle and each man would
take a few minutes to explain what wasn't working in his life. On the second round, they would
discuss what they were going to do to change it. The middle-aged man listened patiently as each
of the other members spoke. When it came time for him to unburden himself, he knew that his
was one of the saddest stories there. Then he noticed that the last person in the circle was a
handsome young man.
"My friends," the young man said almost wistfully, "I have been diagnosed with terminal cancer."
The gasp was audible in the room. "My doctors have given me three to six months to live. I have
struggled with this for a month now and have finally made a decision." His voice gained
self-confidence as it grew. "I am going to take up flying lessons." The words hung in the air.
Flying lessons? "I have chosen to live."
Choose life!
(Psalms 16:11
NRSV)
There is a story about a middle-aged man who attended a men's support group. His wife was
leaving him. His business was near bankruptcy. He had gained weight and his self-esteem wasn't
very high. Even his hair was thinning.
Dear Jesus, thank you for the wonderful life you have given to me. Amen.
