"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give
you rest."
Jesus welcomed all with depth and love. How can you make your church more welcoming?
(Matthew 11:28
NRSV)
There was an article by Tim Unsworth in the NATIONAL CATHOLIC REPORTER a few year
ago that should be read by everyone who loves the church. He was writing about his own Roman
Catholic church but his words are appropriate for every denomination. He notes that in Chicago,
only about 25% of Catholics attend church on an average Sunday. The New York archdiocese has
only a 20% attendance rate. He contrasts those figures with Home Depot the successful home
remodeling store. Home Depot customers average 30 visits each year to that establishment. Why
should customers of a Home Depot be more loyal than customers of Christ's church? Unsworth
believes the answer is what is known in business parlance as customer service.
Dear God, you have welcomed me. Now, may I make sure all of your people are welcome in
my church. Amen.
