And in the case of an athlete, no one is crowned without competing according to
the rules.
There are Monday Night Football fundamentalists (that's me!), toilet-paper-over versus
toilet-paper-under fundamentalists. No white shoes after Labor Day fundamentalists. One and
only one Christmas present opened on Christmas Eve fundamentalists. We are all fundamentalists
about something.
We all choose to erect certain foundational pillars which we use to support the weight of our
attitudes and actions. And there's nothing wrong with that. Fundamentalism only becomes a
problem when we attach handles to those pillars, transforming them into hammers to pound
others into conformity to our rules.
(2 Timothy 2:5
NRSV)
Rules, rules. We all have rules we won't break. Some joggers are fundamentalists about their
jogging. "No matter that it's raining or snowing. It's 5:30 a.m. My exercise regimen must be
followed with precision! Signed, Fundamentally yours, the Jogger."
Loving God, may my main concern be about my conformity to your will. Amen.
