The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.
Our Bible passage today is about light. It's about the light of God's love. Once we become
Christians, once we choose to follow Jesus and live as He lived, then we have the light of God's
love inside of us. Just like a flashlight lets us find our way in the dark, the light of God's love
shows us how to follow God's way of living. Just like a light fills a room and makes the darkness
go away, God's love fills our hearts and makes our sins go away. But just like a goldfish needs to
stay near a light in order to keep its pretty color, we need to stay close to God in order to have
His light in our lives. And we can do that by coming to church and learning about God, by
praying to God, and by reading about God in the Bible.
(Psalms 119:130
NRSV)
Do any of you have fish at home? They're fun pets, aren't they? Goldfish are awfully nice to look
at. They're such a shiny, bright color. It looks like they just glow with light. Did you know that
goldfish lose their color if they're not kept near a light? That's right. Goldfish have to be kept
near a light, a pretty bright light, in order to keep their pretty golden color. If they are kept in
darkness, or if the light around them isn't bright enough, the goldfish starts to fade. So it's
important to always keep your goldfish in a room with good lighting.
Lord Jesus, touch me that I may stay close to your light. Amen.
